The Wurst Bar in Baltimore

10:16 AM

Only in Baltimore would you find a place that proudly claims to be the "wurst bar in Baltimore". Snake Hill in Highlandtown is definitely not the worst bar, but it certainly is a wurst bar and they are fantastic. A corner spot in an old Baltimore row house it's a tiny space that is great for meeting up with a friend or two. Recommended to me by a resent transplant to Baltimore, taking a peak at their menu sold me on stopping in.

The beer menu is extensive with plenty of options to wet your whistle. The draft list is usually pretty set though they do rotate a bit. There's a wildcard beer that changes frequently which I have yet to be brave enough to buy (next time... next time...). If nothing on the draft list tickles your fancy there's also plenty of bottle and can options (mostly local). They also serve a limited list of wines and cocktails of the day if beer is not your thing. Happy hour is rather good with $2 of drafts and discounts on bottles/cans and cocktail drinks from 5pm until 7pm.

A short and sweet menu that is definitely non fussy. While they do have salads and sandwiches if you're going to go there you gotta try their gourmet sausages. Available for the bar or to go, I've had the Rabbit Rattlesnake and the Rosemary & Garlic Lamb both of which were phenomenal. Most come in a brioche bun and you get two topping options. I'm not terribly creative so I usually ask the for the bartender's suggestions. Next up on my list to try is the Alligator Andouille and the The Berserker. I also strongly recommend their Truffle Shuffle Fries. I always get a full size to split. French fries toasted in truffle oil with Parmesan cheese and parsley - I dip them in chipotle mayo and it's heavenly.

The bar top is a treat, made with thousands of scrabble pieces, we've spent hours looking for words my favorite being "cheeseburger" if you can find it. A fortune teller glows behind you if you sit at the bar that I'm keen to try out one day. There are no hostesses or servers you just order food or drink right from the bar making it an extremely casual spot. The bartenders are always extremely friendly and it's the best place to find yourself in the evening. I can't recommend it enough. Oh, and the book I was reading up top was Drinking Coffee Elsewhere written by Z.Z. Packer which makes many Baltimore references. Perfect for reading at the wurst bar in Baltimore.
