Jajaja Plantas Mexicana

I mentioned in my last post that I recently had another quick trip up to New York a few weeks ago (very quick... meaning less than 48 hours). Somehow I managed to squeeze in seeing 8 friends, stop by in three different neighborhoods in Brooklyn, and go to a concert. For my only full day in NY, I spent it with my friend Abbey as she showed me a few of her favorite places in Soho: browsing for books at McNally Jackson, picking up some skin care products at Glossier and Aesop, checking out the new Everlane brick and mortar store, fawning over all the clothes at & Other Stories and Oak + Fort, and lastly indulging in some heavenly fragrances at Le Labo - I bought their mandarin/sesame shower gel and can not stop smelling it.

After all the walking and shopping we were craving some tacos. I remembered saving a place I came across on Instagram and after looking it up and finding it was a short walk away we made our way there.

Located in the Lower East Side, Jajaja is a contemporary Mexican restaurant featuring tequila and mezcal cocktails, traditional Mexican beers, fresh pressed juices, and plant based Mexican fare. Yes, it's an all-vegan Mexican restaurant. I'm 100% not anti-vegan, but I'm also not 100% vegan. I'll try anything and typically will like anything, however Abbey and I had absolutely no clue going in that this place was vegan. It was quite a happy discovery - though we did felt a little silly we didn't catch on immediately.

We started with nachos with guacamole ('chorizo', fermented black beans, turmeric queso fundido, spicy vegetable relish, sour cream). We chose the small order so we had room for our tacos and it was massive. Absolutely more than enough for 2-3 people, and delicious. For tacos we decided to each pick a different pair and share. We went with the Buffalo Cauliflower and the Chayote Fish Tacos. This is what alerted us that things weren't quite what it seemed. The "fish" was clear! Immediately we thought... oh god are we eating raw fish?! We gently asked our waiter what kind of fish it was to which he said, oh no it's chayote squash! That's when it dawned on us that we were eating all vegan, little things began to make sense - most obvious why there wasn't many meats mentioned on the menu.

Honestly, it was probably some of the best vegan food I have had thus far, not that my palette is that expansive...yet, but I highly recommend if you have friends who are skeptical of vegan dishes to give Jajaja a go. I promise you they won't even be able to tell the difference between meat based or plant based.
